Master of Arts in Clinical Counseling

History has taught us many lessons but the one thing that always seems to linger is this: We, as a people, will always have differing beliefs. And we will always need to be guided back to our common human nature in order to come together and be unified.

Be a part of creating a bonded world with the Master of Arts in Clinical Counseling from Alliant International University’s California School of Professional Psychology.

In this program, you will focus on supporting your clients with a strengths-based, resilience perspective that emboldens and restores mind, body, and soul. You will learn to think differently through advanced coursework that focuses on mental wellness and prevention. And discover psychotherapeutic techniques that encourage clients to overcome disability, embrace change, experience personal growth, and conquer psychosocial and environmental issues.

Through coursework that develops your skills as a practitioner, you will learn to diagnose, treat, and proactively guide both individuals and groups. Steeped in academic, experiential, and research-based principles, the MA in Clinical Counseling program, offers in-depth coursework and direct field placements. As part of the Clinical Counseling Master’s Degree Program, you will, at times, be required to participate in learning activities designed to encourage self-disclosure. Beliefs, values, and issues are critically examined in order to best help every student grow into an effective counselor.

Because when it comes down to it, who is a counselor other than the voice for those who haven’t yet found theirs; the strength for those who haven’t yet discovered their own; and the light of conscience for those who are struggling in darkness. This program is designed to unchain minds and allow our students to play their role in bettering the world, leaving it better than they found it, and building a foundation for generations to come.

Chart your Course

The MA in Clinical Counseling degree program is designed to train you to listen, help, and act. Upon graduation, you are eligible to attain Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor (LPCC) licensure and you are free to choose your desired area of focus. Whichever path you choose, you will provide vital support by diagnosing and treating mental, behavioral, and emotional disorders and challenges based on a recovery-oriented approach.

But you do all of this by first educating yourself within a program that follows the requirements set by the California Board of Behavioral Sciences.  The program is in the process of applying for accreditation with the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Programs (CACREP).
How Will You Help?

As an LPCC, your concentration opportunities are vast. You could offer client-centered counseling in:

  • Children and Families
  • Couples and Individuals
  • LGBTQ Community
  • Addiction Issues
  • PTSD
  • Disabled and Challenged People
  • Personal Growth
  • Anxiety and Depression
  • Crisis
  • Wellness and Prevention

The setting from which you offer this support is just as varied. Private or group practices and hospital or mental health clinics are just a few. You can teach. You can consult. Or you can research ways to improve the entire system.

Multicultural Mastery

We live in a patchwork world. As the different pieces are sewn into place and the quilt of life becomes ever more diverse, it’s vital for the field of counseling to evolve alongside it. Alliant makes that happen for Masters in Clinical Counseling students with two options for gaining multicultural competence.

Within these degree programs, you will not only critically examine your own culture, but the array of unique backgrounds that make this country the greatest melting pot in the world.

Mexico City Immersion Program: The need for professional bilingual counselors is rapidly growing. Meet the need. Develop Spanish language skills and understand the cultural nuances with the five-week Spanish Language and Cultural Immersion Program at Alliant’s Mexico City Campus. Students should complete the program in the summer between Year one and Year two.

A Foundation in Firsthand

If you don’t “do” you can’t “know.” In our Clinical Counseling program, you start doing from the very beginning. Gain experience in everything from neuropsychological assessments to treating anger issues, grief, loss, intimacy struggles, social concerns, and so much more. So when it’s time to go out into the “real” world and do good, you already know just how it should be done.

Supervised Clinical Experience: Within the first year, students participate in observation experiences with clients in clinical settings. Over the course of the program, a total of 700 hours of clinical counseling experience is earned, with a minimum of 280 hours under direct supervision and guidance.

You can choose from three specializations in clinical counseling:

Social Justice: With this specialization, you will support the community. For two semesters, you will engage in a collaborative community research project that culminates in a grant proposal submission aiming to further efforts within the field of mental health services.

Forensics: Through this specialization, there is an opportunity to focus on forensic counseling. To do so, you will take three elective courses in forensics. These are paired with further hands-on training through a forensic practicum.

Marriage and Family: Students interested in working with children and family can choose this specialization. Your elective courses and practicum hours will allow you the opportunity to be recognized under the California Board of Behavioral Sciences (BBS) and qualify to work with the same kind of clients as a Marriage and Family Therapist.
