FAQ

Can you be a licensed psychologist with a master's degree in California?

A master's degree alone does not qualify you for licensure as a psychologist. You typically need to complete a doctoral or PhD program in psychology. Licensure as a psychologist requires further school and supervised work experience. However, an MS psychology program can still prepare students to work in clinical or community-based roles and pursue licensure in psychology fields such as clinical counseling, marriage and family therapy, and social work.

Can I pursue a doctoral or PhD program after completing an online psychology master's degree?

Absolutely. You can apply to a doctoral psychology program to continue your study. A PhD in psychology emphasizes research, while a PsyD focuses more on clinical practice. Alliant's clinical psychology programs in California are accredited by the American Psychological Association (APA). We have strong professional connections across the state. Whichever psychology specialization you choose, you'll have the right training, knowledge and skills needed to succeed.
