Bilingual Authorization Overview
Are you a teacher interested in using your bilingual language abilities to teach dual-language students? If you’re proficient in Spanish or Mandarin and you want to teach in a dual language immersion environment or bilingual classroom, this program provides you with the authorization needed to provide instruction to English learners.
The bilingual authorization has two pathways available for two types of candidates:
- If you’re a post-credential applicant, you must hold a valid single subject, multiple subject, or education specialist credential at the time of application.
- If you’re in the process of earning your credential, you must be concurrently enrolled in an Alliant single subject, multiple subject, or education specialist credential program at the time of application.
The dual bilingual education allows you to provide instruction for students whose primary language is Spanish or Mandarin. As an aspiring bilingual teacher, the program prepares you to instruct learners in diverse settings, while also educating you about the culture and heritage associated with the secondary language.
Alliant’s fully online, CTC-approved bilingual authorization program enables you to provide the following types of instruction:
- Instruction for English Language Development (ELD)
- Instruction for Primary Language Development
- Specially Designed Academic Instruction Delivered in English (SDAIE)
- Content Instruction Delivered in the Primary Language

Online Coursework
The dual language teaching program is offered in an online format that allows you to pursue your education and professional development while completing your coursework.
Concentrated Format
The two-way dual language program is offered in three, eight-week terms, providing nine units of credit, focused on preparing you to enter the dual-lingual classroom with confidence.

The Bilingual Authorization program at Alliant has as its mission to assure that California teachers are prepared to serve the needs of English learners in the K-12 context. The program provides teacher candidates with the history of bilingual education in the U.S. and in California, while also providing the theoretical underpinnings of and educational practices related to bilingual education.
Bilingual teachers also serve as resources to educate their students to be productive members of a global society. They also represent a linguistic and cultural bridge that links the bilingual education context to society as a whole. Candidates also understand the importance of family and community in the development of bilingualism and the implementation of bilingual educational programs.
Candidates in the bilingual authorization program will take BLA 64000 Dimensions of Bilingual Education, BLA 64100 Theory and Method of Bilingual Pedagogy, and BLA 64200 Culture of Emphasis.

Degree Information
Program Prerequisites
If you’re a post-credential applicant, you must hold a valid single subject, multiple subject, or education specialist credential at the time of application for the dual learning program.
If you’re in the process of earning your credential, you must be concurrently enrolled in an Alliant single subject, multiple subject, or education specialist credential program at the time of application for the two-way dual immersion program. In addition to the coursework of the two-way immersion program, a clinical practice component will be required.
Bilingual Authorization Admissions Requirements
Post-Credential Applicants
- Post-credential applicants must hold a valid Single Subject, Multiple Subject, or Education Specialist credential at the time of applying for enrollment in the Bilingual Authorization program.
- Post-Credential Applicants: In order to be admitted to the program and obtain their Bilingual Authorization, post-credential candidates must verify one (1) of the following at the point of admission:
- Spanish Program:
- Be fluent in Spanish and pass the CSET Languages Other Than English (LOTE) Spanish Subtest III (Subtest #147) or
- Demonstrate Spanish proficiency at the ACTFL Intermediate High level, which will be determined via a Spanish language assessment.

- Mandarin Program:

- Spanish Program:
- Applicants must verify one (1) of the following at the point of admission:
- Valid Language Development Specialist (LDS) Certificate, CLAD Certificate, teaching credential with English Learner Authorization or CLAD Emphasis, or
- Eligibility for a CLAD Certificate or teaching credential with an English learner authorization
Concurrent Credential Applicants
- Must be concurrently enrolled in an Alliant Single Subject, Multiple Subject, or Education Specialist credential program when applying for entry into the Bilingual Authorization program.
- Concurrent Intern Candidates: In order to be admitted to the program and obtain their Bilingual Authorization, concurrent Intern candidates must verify one (1) of the following at the point of admission:
- Spanish Program:
- Be fluent in Spanish and pass the CSET Languages Other Than English (LOTE) Spanish Subtest III (Subtest #147)
- Mandarin Program:
- Be fluent in Mandarin and pass the CSET Languages Other Than English (LOTE) Mandarin Subtest III (Subtest #165)
- Spanish Program:
- Concurrent Student Teacher Candidates: In order to be admitted to the program and obtain their Bilingual Authorization, concurrent Student Teacher candidates must verify one (1) of the following at the point of admission:

Frequently Asked Questions
Are there any special requirements for entry into this program?
Post-credential applicants must hold a preliminary single subject, multiple subject, or education specialist credential. Those in the process of earning a teaching credential must be concurrently enrolled in an Alliant single subject, multiple subject, or education specialist credential program at the time of application for the language immersion education.
All applicants must be fluent in either Spanish or Mandarin and pass the CSET languages other than English (LOTE) relevant subtest. Applicants must hold either a valid language development specialist (LDS) certificate, CLAD certificate, teaching credential with English learner authorization or CLAD emphasis, or eligibility for a CLAD certificate or teaching credential with an English learner authorization.
When does the bilingual authorization program start?
The bilingual immersion education program launches in March 2022 and is an eight-week program with open enrollment during each term-based enrollment period. You can find a copy of our eight-week term academic calendar here.
How long does it take to complete the bilingual authority online program?
The bilingual authorization is a three-term, nine-unit program that can be combined within your existing teacher education program, or can be completed in six months or less if taken independently as a post-credential addition.
