Helping Students Find Their Voice

Language and education are, have always been, and will continue to be, two of the greatest barriers to equality for America’s immigrants. Those who cannot communicate in the country’s primary language cannot properly advocate for themselves. So, what better way to give everyone in this nation a voice than to help them learn English?

For speakers of foreign languages, an average school day can seem like the most daunting of tasks. I’m sure most of us can imagine how monumental a task it would be to learn algebra or biology in a foreign language. An ESL teacher’s job description goes well beyond the classroom. ESL teachers are vital to the success of English Language learner (ELL) students. Not only do they help students prosper in the school system, they help students navigate life in a foreign country and help students adapt to a new culture. At Alliant, our lifeblood is impact. And our impact lives through every CSOE alumnus who is helping students find their voice.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What is the career outlook for graduates of the EdD in TESOL degree program?

The Bureau of Labor Statistics projects that Adult Literacy and HS-Equivalency Diploma teachers—the umbrella under which TESOL falls—is set lose about 3,400 jobs nationally over the next 8 years. While this may seem like a lot, it represents only a less-than-5% drop in the national demand for TESOL teachers. There are several reasons for this, but the largest is due to a decline in enrollment in the applicable programs over the last several years, and, possibly, changes in government funding for these programs that may make them less accessible than they have been in the past.

  • What kind of job can I expect to get with this degree?

Graduates of our Doctorate in TESOL degree program can expect to find a career teaching English to speakers of other languages  across all age ranges and the applicable settings—private language schools for children, adult education centers for adults, community college language programs, and so on. They may also use this degree to enhance a pre-existing career in education to offer them a wider range of opportunity for employment in a setting where knowledge of TESOL may be preferred. EdD in TESOL graduates also have the opportunity to work in the design and creation of classroom materials for TESOL programs, as their advanced degree offers them unique perspective on the challenges of teaching TESOL, and how those challenges can be conquered by both teachers and students.

  • What scholarship and financial aid options are available to me?

Private and public scholarships can help you meet the cost of your education. Alliant International University is pleased to be able to offer a significant number of institutional scholarships for many of our students. Learn more about these scholarship opportunities here. Additional Financial aid is available for those who qualify in the form of loans, grants, federal work study, and military aid. Learn more in our Financial Options Guide.

  • What are the dissertation requirements for this degree program?

The dissertation process will occupy the entirety of the third and final year of the program, with each of the (minimum) three semesters dedicated to one of the macro-steps of the dissertation process—planning, proposal, and preparation. Each step is its own 3-credit course, and, at the end of the  dissertation process,  students  will present a completed dissertation to the  their dissertation committee  for approval.

  • When does the EdD in TESOL degree program start?

The EdD in TESOL degree program is a semester-long program and is open for enrollment during the Fall and Spring enrollment periods. You can find a copy of our Fall Semester academic calendar here.

  • How long does it take to complete the EdD in TESOL degree program?

The EdD in TESOL degree is a 51-credit program and takes a minimum of 3 years to complete, across 7 semesters.
