SAN DIEGO, Calif.-- March 21, 2013 -- A forum on Preventing Educator Sexual Misconduct sponsored by the New York Schools Insurance Reciprocal (NYSIR) will be held April 1-2, 2013. Experts in policy, enforcement, insurance, training and content are joining together with colleagues and related professionals from New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania and Connecticut at the forum to promote understanding and solutions that will safeguard schools and their students from the from the epidemic of sexual misconduct.
Attendees will share and discuss model practices, statutes, regulations, policies and training protocols on topics related to the recognition, prevention and appropriate response to sexual exploitation, abuse and other misbehavior by school personnel and students.
Associate Professor in the California School of Forensic Studies Dr. Glenn Lipson is a featured speaker at the event along with Karla Rhay, Ed.D., Daniel Shinoff, J.D. Working together, the three have developed approaches for the prevention of employee, student and school volunteer misconduct. At the forum, these speakers will present together in panels which demonstrate the richness that arises from multi-disciplinary collaboration in the area of risk prevention.
All are passionate about protecting students and schools from offenders. A direct off-shoot of their collaboration is the sexual misconduct prevention training developed by Dr. Lipson. This training is now offered through Making Right Choices (MRC), a company founded by Dr. Lipson that develops courses through engaging in dialogue with all stakeholders. MRC’s community participation research approach emphasizes employee health as a positive way of safeguarding students.
Additional experts will participate via video conference, including President of S.E.S.A.M.E. (Stop Educator Sexual Abuse Misconduct & Exploitation) Terry Miller, discussing pending legislation and the work of S.E.S.A.M.E. and University of Phoenix Education Research Chair Dr. Troy Hutchings, sharing his recent focus group findings as he works toward creating a national code for teachers' ethics. Finally, Vermont Attorney Frederick Lane will discuss the cyber elements of misconduct.
