Supporting Families & Know Your Rights

Ways to Support Families

  1. Screen for Stress – Ask about stressors related to immigration status and provide mental health resources (e.g., Soluna app for teens, FIND desk for community support).
  2. Provide Accurate Information – Share legal rights and advocacy resources, such as those from the Immigrant Legal Resource Center (ILRC).
  3. Write Support Letters – Use the "Immigration" template in Epic for families facing deportation. For guidance on writing effective support letters, visit the Immigration Justice Campaign.
  4. Family Preparedness Plans – Help families prepare in case of separation or deportation. Resources like the ILRC's Family Preparedness Plan can be helpful.

Know Your Rights

  • Right to Remain Silent – Families can refuse to answer questions about their immigration status.
  • Right to Refuse Consent to a Search – Decline searches without a warrant.
  • Right to a Lawyer – Request legal representation.
  • Right to Make a Phone Call – Contact legal aid services.
  • Right to Demand a Warrant – Authorities cannot enter a home without a valid warrant.

How to Avoid Scholarship Scams

Scammers target students with fake scholarship opportunities. Here’s how to protect yourself:

  1. Be Skeptical of 'Too Good to Be True' Offers
  2. Avoid Urgency Tactics – Legitimate scholarships do not rush applicants.
  3. Be Wary of Exclusive 'Insider' Information
  4. Ignore Money-Back Guarantees
  5. Watch Out for Fake 'Unclaimed Funds' Claims
  6. Verify Organizational Affiliations
  7. Recognize Phishing Emails & Fake Websites
  8. Never Provide Personal or Banking Information
