Winter 2013 Updates

Dr. Barbara Hutchinson (CSPP-SF, Clinical PsyD, ’11) shares, “I’m currently working as a clinical psychologist specializing in sleep medicine/psychology at Carilion Clinic, a not-for-profit health care organization based out of Virginia. I am the first mental provider to be brought into a comprehensive multidisciplinary team leading the way to promote healthy sleep.”

Fall 2013 Updates

Dr. Rut Gubkin (CSPP-Alameda, Clinical PhD ’91) is the Chair-elect of Division VII (Diversity and Social Justice) of CPA and chairs the Diversity Committee and the Disaster Response Network Committee of the Alameda County Psychological Association.

Dr. Angel Johnson and Dr. Cyrell Williams (both CSPP-LA Org Psych PhD, ’08) presented in our San Francisco campus Organizational Psychology Colloquium Series in October. Their topic was “What’s After CSPP? Professional Lives in Organizational Psychology.”

Campus News & Events
You are cordially invited to join us for a Retirement Party in honor of CSPP alumnus Dr. Ed Bourg from one of our first San Francisco graduating classes and long-time faculty member. The event will be held Friday, December 6 from 4-6pm at the San Francisco campus (link below under Handy CSPP Alumni Links) in our new classroom space, room C100.  Please RSVP by clicking here for our Evite. If you can make it, please just RSVP “yes” on the Evite by December 4. If you can’t make it, but would like to wish Dr. Bourg well, you are able to leave comments to wish Dr. Bourg the best when you RSVP “no” on the Evite.

If you live in the San Francisco Bay Area (regardless which campus you attended), please also mark your calendars for Friday, April 4 (late afternoon / early evening) for the CSPP Dean’s Reception in San Francisco. This will be a very special event you won’t want to miss, and a great opportunity to with fellow alumni and reconnect with current CSPP-SF faculty and students.

We welcome Janine Mixon as our new San Francisco Campus Director! Janine comes to CSPP/Alliant after serving many years at Golden Gate University. A HUGE thank you to Joe Tally, our Director of Library Services, Sheila Henderson, our former Associate Provost for I-MERIT and Meg Hardin, Executive Assistant to the President, for all stepping into the Interim Campus Director role and doing such a great job!

The Clinical PsyD Program is delighted to announce the launching of our Social Justice Track, which now has students in all 3 curricular years.  The track absorbs the former Multicultural/Community, Psychology of Women, LGBT, and Gender Studies emphases, and offers special courses, practica, and dissertation methods, as well as creating a campus community of interested faculty and students. The track builds skills and knowledge for working with people and communities that have been marginalized and oppressed. These include, but are not limited to, people of color, lgbt people, people with disabilities, women, immigrants, those living in poverty, and the aging population. We are eager to involve our alumni, so if you would like to hear more about our initiatives, please email CSPPalumni@alliant.edu

CSPP will be hosting a Networking Mixer the evening of Friday, May 16 at the Society of Industrial-Organizational Psychology Conference in Honolulu, HI. If you are planning on going to SIOP, please email CSPPAlumni@alliant.edu   For now, please save the date!

Summer 2013 Updates

On May 3, we had our CSPP Dean’s Reception in San Francisco and honored Dr. Paul Werner, Professor Emeritus and long-time Clinical PhD faculty member. Dr. Werner taught at CSPP for over 30 years! The Paul Werner Dissertation Award for Innovation and Creativity was announced at this event, and then given to a deserving graduating student at our commencement ceremony. Please click here for all the details of this exciting event!.

This Summer, CSPP/Alliant participated in the San Francisco Pride Parade in a BIG way with a double-decker bus!  Please click here for the video clip.

Special thanks to Meg Hardin, as the San Francisco Pride Chair, student Sarah Saleh for arranging the double-decker bus donation with Spencer as the driver from City Sightseeing Tours, Dr. Michael Loewy and his partner who brought terrific music,  Dr. Mary Fambrough who brought food and was one of our contingent monitors, Betsy Gomezand her husband who made a special effort to be contingent monitors, and the fantastic STUDENTS who helped with planning, contingent monitor training, the bus design, and post-parade clean up, including Jeannette BergfeldRaquel HenrySimon FerberJeannette Bergfeld, Ken PerezKristen Wortman, and Jessica Valencia.

Spring 2013 Alumni Updates

Dr. Jei Africa (CSPP-Alameda Clinical PsyD ’02 and CSPP-SF Postdoctoral MS in Clinical Psychopharmacology ’07) recently established the Jei Africa Dissertation Award for Filipino American Studies, and we are pleased to announce that we have selected the first recipient of the Award, Jacqueline Jimenez. Ms. Jimenez’ dissertation topic is “Transnational Parenting: The Experience of Filipino Immigrant Mothers Who Have Left Their Children in the Phillipines.” Thank you Dr. Africa for your generosity, and congratulations Jacqueline!

Dr. Chris Tobin (CSPP-SF, Org Psych PhD ’05) presented in our Organizational Psychology Colloquium Series in May at our SF campus. His topic was “Translating Business Priorities into Individual, Team and Organizational Interventions.”

Dr. LeighAnn DeJesse (CSPP-SF Clinical PsyD ’12) and Dr. Diane Zelman (CSPP-SF, Postdoctoral MS/Clinical Psychopharmocology ’11, and Professor and Associate Program director, CSPP-HK & SF), had their article, “Promoting Optimal Mental Health-nutritionist Collaboration in the Treatment of Eating Disorders,” accepted for publication in the journal Eating Disorders. Their work based on the above article was also accepted for presentation at the Eastern Psychological Association in March.

Dr. Eugene Dilan (CSPP-Alameda, Clinical PsyD ’99) is the current Chair of CPA Division III and President of Dilan Consulting Group. Dr. Dilan organized the CPA Division III Northern California event at the CSPP-SF earlier this month in conjunction with the SF Organization Psychology program. Dr. Chris Tobin, another alum, was the keynote speaker (see below).

Dr. Nina Ghiselli (CSPP-Alameda, Clinical PsyD ’00, CSPP-SF Adjunct Faculty & current Director for Accessibility Services for CSPP/Alliant) has created the Office of Accessibility (formerly Office of Disability Services) Online Resource Center. Please also explore their Facebook page — a recent post was an NY Times article about “Disability and Discrimination at the Doctor’s Office.”

Dr. George Hu (CSPP-SF, Clinical PsyD ’11) wrote a piece entitled “Working Internationally as an Early Career Professional: My Journey” for the international affairs newsletter of APA.

Dr. Alexis Shoemate (CSPP-SF, Organizational Psychology PhD ’03) recently left Alliant International University after 5 years of service with our Institutional Research Department. She is now the Director of Operations for Party Corps, whose mission is to connect good people to good causes through music.

Dr. Chris Tobin (CSPP-SF, Organizational Psychology PhD ’05) presented in our San Francisco Organizational Psychology Colloquium Series earlier this month on the topic of “Translating Business Priorities Into Individual, Team and Organizational Interventions.” Chris is presently the Senior Vice President of HR at SayMedia.

Dr. Benjamin Tong (CSPP-Berkeley, Clinical PhD ’74), presented on the topic of “Taoism” in our Huston Smith Center for Psychological and Spiritual Development Spirituality Forum Series earlier this Spring.

Dr. Randy Wyatt (CSPP-Berkeley, Clinical PhD ’89, and current CSPP-SF Director of Professional Training) presented on the topic of “Working with Client Spirituality in Psychotherapy: The Good Samaritan and Beyond” in our Huston Smith Center for Psychological and Spiritual Development Spirituality Forum Series earlier this Spring.

New Degree Program in SF: The Couple & Family Therapy (formerly MFT) Program is now being offered on the San Francisco campus! Under the direction of Site Director Dr. Marcia Michaels, our first masters cohort will begin classes in Fall 2013. We expect the campus to be a local gathering place for MFTs and alumni, and plan to offer a wide range of activities. For instance, in conjunction with AAMFT-CA, we offered the Employment Options for MFTs Workshop in November and the statewide MFT Student Research Conference will be held in February 2014. We encourage you to us (CSPPalumni@alliant.edu) if there are specific professional opportunities you would like us to offer, or just to introduce yourself to Dr. Michaels. She is new to the community so she welcomes meeting new colleagues.

Honoring of Dr. Paul Werner, long-time CSPP Faculty: CSPP Professor Emeritius Dr. Paul Werner was honored earlier this month for his 30+ years of service to CSPP. Many former faculty were in attendance, and the San Francisco campus unveiled a “On the Shoulders of Giants” wall which honors our CSPP-Berkeley/Alameda/San Francisco faculty who helped to make us what we are today.
