Heather Barnett

Biography

Heather Barnett, EdD, is an educator, counselor, and higher education leader with nearly two decades of experience spanning K–12 education, special education advocacy, and graduate-level instruction. She currently serves as an Adjunct Professor at Alliant International University, where she has taught and designed courses in educational leadership, academic support services, positive behavior support, and educational technology. In addition to her teaching role, Dr. Barnett serves as the District Employed Supervisor (DES) Support Specialist for the Preliminary Administrative Services Credential program, supporting candidates, district-employed supervisors, and faculty by developing resources, coordinating communication, and strengthening systems that connect coursework with field-based leadership practice.

Dr. Barnett holds a Doctor of Education in Educational Leadership and Management from Alliant International University and is a Pat Tillman Foundation Scholar. Her professional background includes school counseling, student services, and extensive collaboration in IEP, 504, and SST processes to support diverse learners. She brings deep expertise in autism spectrum disorders, inclusive education, online learning, and curriculum development, with a strong focus on equity, access, and systems-level improvement. Her work consistently emphasizes relationship-driven leadership, data-informed decision-making, and practical strategies that enhance student engagement and professional growth.

Beyond her academic and administrative roles, Dr. Barnett is a dedicated advocate for students with disabilities and their families, with over 10,000 hours of intensive in-home behavioral support experience and a long history of community service and nonprofit leadership. A military spouse and parent, she is deeply committed to public service, child advocacy, and strengthening educational systems to better support students and families across educational transitions.

Scholarship & Contributions to the Field

Developed and implemented a developmental seminar designed to support families in planning for the transition of their adult child with special needs into adulthood and postsecondary opportunities. The seminar focuses on coordinated life planning, educational pathways, service navigation, and advocacy, equipping families with practical tools to support successful transitions beyond secondary education.
