Emeryville Campus: Project Evolve

Enrollment Update

As of early 2026, the Emeryville branch campus is no longer accepting new students.

This branch campus will continue operating through 2031. Alliant University is committed to ensuring all currently enrolled students complete their programs with academic and student services support.

The long-term changes at the Emeryville branch campus rolling out over the next five years are specific to this location. The main San Diego campus and the larger branch campus in Los Angeles, plus locations in Sacramento and Phoenix, have no changes or planned changes.

If you have questions about your specific circumstances or about Project Evolve more broadly, please reach out to ask@alliant.edu, and we will connect you with the appropriate support team.

Campus Overview

As part of Project Evolve, Alliant has decided not to renew the long-term lease for the Emeryville branch campus when it expires in 2031.

This is not an immediate campus closure. Emeryville will continue operating for several more years to ensure continuity for active students and faculty.

This decision reflects long-term strategic planning in response to new federal student loan policy changes coming in July 2026 and evolving market conditions.

Why This Decision Was Made

The Emeryville location presents unique long-term pressures:

  • The San Francisco Bay Area market is highly saturated with similar academic programs.
  • Operating costs are among the highest nationally.
  • Federal loan policy changes increase financial barriers in high-cost metropolitan markets, especially at smaller branch campuses
  • Small-scale operations in premium real estate markets carry disproportionate financial risk, and the Bay Area has the second-highest real estate costs in the U.S.

Key Data Points

  • Even after multi-year optimization efforts, costs remain significantly higher than the institutional average.
  • Federal funding policy changes are estimated to impact up to 30% of new students after July 2026, increasing enrollment pressure at smaller locations

As national higher education trends shift away from small branch campuses in high-cost markets, institutions are consolidating into larger flagship campuses and online/hybrid delivery models.

Student Support and Continuity

  • All currently enrolled students will complete their program at Emeryville.
  • Academic advising, faculty, and student services remain in place.
  • Northern California students will continue to be served through expanded online programs and consolidated campuses.

Faculty and Staff

  • Faculty contracts will be honored as written.
  • Staffing decisions will align with program completion timelines.
  • Leadership will provide continued updates and engagement throughout the transition period.

Long-Term Alignment

Project Evolve reflects proactive planning for structural shifts in higher education, including:

  • New federal loan caps
  • Elimination of Grad PLUS for future cohorts
  • Changing student demand patterns
  • Long-term sustainability modeling

This is a strategic adjustment for the future, not a response to a financial crisis.
