Dr. Theo Burnes – CSPP Associate Professor

Dr. Theodore Burnes, Associate Professor, engages students daily in courses on clinical interviewing, human development, applied research methods, advanced psychopathology, and group therapy. He joined the Los Angeles Clinical PhD faculty in 2010 and is an active member of the campus community. His areas of research and clinical interest include mental health and wellness for LGBTQI people, social justice advocacy, group therapy and clinical group process, qualitative methods and epistemologies, and supervision and teaching pedagogies in psychology.

Dr. Burnes was awarded a fellowship as a part of Alliant’s I-MERIT international faculty engagement initiative and spent a week at Alliant’s campus in Mexico City. There, presented a workshop, “Trauma and Social Justice Advocacy for Individuals with Multiple Marginalized Identities.” He attended daily Spanish language immersion classes; visited the local Salvation Army Clinic, which provides a place for mental health treatment in one of the roughest yet culturally rich neighborhoods; and engaged in discussions with first- and third-year interns at the National Psychiatric Institute.

The American Psychological Association recently featured Dr. Burnes on the cover of its Annual Report (2011) for his contributions to competency modeling and leadership development in applied psychology training.
