Organizational Psychology Internships: Putting Theory to the Real-World Test

A distinguishing feature of CSPP’s Organizational Psychology PhD program is the integration of courses, seminars, research and professional training with field experience.

Students develop professional practice related skills in organizational psychology and consulting through a variety of professional training experiences including class projects, case studies, in-class simulations, and internship.

Hands-On Training Side-By-Side with Experts

All students gain practical experience through supervised internships across a variety of settings such as consulting firms, major corporations, government agencies, and community organizations.

Field placements and/or internships provide students with hands-on training in:

  • Organizational systems
  • The diagnosis of organizational problems
  • The design, implementation and evaluation of intervention strategies.

Full-Time or Part-Time Internships

While many doctoral students participate in two years of half-time (15-22 hours per week) placements, in some programs students obtain one-year full-time or half-time internships that take place throughout the United States or sometimes abroad.

An Organizational Psychology PhD most frequently leads to a career in organizational psychology (sometimes referred to as Industrial-Organizational psychology, or I-O psychology). This term is used somewhat generally and can describe a wide variety of job duties and career options under its umbrella, and the field as a whole is expecting some extraordinary job growth from now until 2022—over 50%! In fact, its projected growth rate of 53% makes it the fastest-growing field across all disciplines in the entire nation because of the newfound emphasis in companies to improve the efficiency of their organizations and the ability for organizational psychologists to show causality between their contribution and improved performance of their business or organization.

Graduates of the PhD in Organizational Psychology degree program often work in corporate settings, holding positions such as personnel analyst, project leader, human resources partner or manager, or in consulting positions—either in external research or internal organization—for their companies or organizations. They can also work in positions such as: talent development, instructional design, talent coaching, union organizers and representatives, diversity and management analysis, and more.

The PhD in Organizational Psychology program offers its students two concentrations—Executive Coaching and Strategic Human Resource Management—and one specialization, Consulting Psychology. The concentrations consist of three 3-credit courses that are taken during the third and fourth years in the program, as part of the regular degree-completion process. The Consulting Psychology Specialization is an 11-course, 23-credit specialization that both supplements the main curriculum, and replaces several courses in the main curriculum as well.

The Organizational Psychology PhD is offered as a semester-long program and is open for enrollment during the Spring and Fall enrollment periods. You can find a copy of our 2018-2019 Fall Semester academic calendar here.

The PhD in Organizational Psychology degree is a 98-credit program and takes a minimum of 4 years to complete, across 8 semesters.
