California Teachers of English Learners (CTEL) and Cross-Cultural Language and Academic Development (CLAD) Certificate Program

Almost a quarter of students attending school across the United States speak another language at home.* By day they speak English, by night they may speak a myriad of other languages and dialects. And you are the bridge in between.

With a CTEL/CLAD Certification from Alliant International University’s California School of Education, you will be armed with the knowledge needed to ensure your student has a hand to hold as they cross that bridge of communication.

Just four classes in less than six months will help bring you up to speed on the lessons, assessments, and methods to make sure your bilingual students have the support they need to succeed in class. Alliant’s California Commission on Teacher Credentialing-approved CLAD certification program is offered in a flexible, online format that more than 1,000 other teachers have used to earn the certification they need to support their students.

By speaking your student’s language both literally and educationally, you are giving them a much better chance to succeed – and a person they can count on.

Experience in the Field

From learning to doing. From theory to application. Take the online into the real world by getting out into the field and immersing yourself. Whether you go to your own school site or another, you have options on the type of hands-on work you’ll need to complete the program. Here are a few examples of field work as part of the Alliant CTEL/CLAD certification program:

  • Classroom observations
  • Interviews with practicing CLAD-authorized teachers in instructional settings with diverse learners
  • Demonstration lessons that include applicable principles, methodologies, and techniques in a linguistically diverse classroom

What you learn from your time in the field will not only enrich your approach to education, but is prime material to use in your professional portfolio. So you can get your certification, and get to work.

A Showcase of your Skillset

As part of the CTEL/CLAD certificate program at Alliant, you’re tasked with creating a portfolio of work. This will show the world how well you know your stuff, with a compilation of your field work and coursework throughout the program.

A strong portfolio will not only help solidify your career, but it will earn you the recommendation you need to receive official certification. Here’s an idea of what will go into your portfolio:

  • Lesson plans that show strategies to encourage second language development
  • Ways in which you have incorporated specifically-designed academic instruction into your work
  • How your lesson plans have been culturally inclusive
  • Examples, and explanations of, assessments and feedback given to students
  • How feedback from students will influence your approach and lesson plans
