Online PPS School Counseling Credential Program

Our credential program was developed with both full-time students and busy, working individuals in mind. Because our PPS credential program is online, your home is the classroom.

Hands-On Experience

An on-ground practicum component is required for program completion through one of our six California campuses, culminating in 600 hours of supervised field experience.

The career outlook for those who have obtained their Master of Arts in Education with PPS Credential in School Counseling is strong. The Bureau of Labor Statistics projects a growth rate of 13% for school counselors between 2016 and 2026—a total of almost 40,000 positions nationally. Note that this number is just for school counselors and does not reflect the ability of those seeking a more traditional education position that they would wish to supplement with this credential, though traditional education positions have a strong outlook as well.

Graduates of our PPS in School Counseling Credential program should expect to find a career as a counselor at the elementary-, middle-, or high-school level. They may also be in a more traditional teaching position and wish to supplement their pre-existing credentials with this one.

The Online School Counseling Credential program is an 8-week term program and is open for enrollment during each of those respective enrollment periods. You can find a copy of our 2018-2019 8-week term academic calendar here.

The PPS in School Counseling Credential is a 49-credit program and takes a minimum of 2 years to complete, over 11 terms.

Students complete 100 hours of practicum and assignments will vary throughout the program. Example practicum assignments include the following:

  • Peer counseling
  • Personal and career assessments
  • Personal counseling experience in either an individual or group context
  • School-based programs serving parents and family members
  • Community service programs serving children and families
  • Shadowing a school counselor
  • Observing classroom instruction
  • Attending district and school-based meetings

Alliant’s Online School Counseling PPS credential program prepares students for jobs as counselors within California’s K-12 school districts. Students should check with specific state licensing requirements if they wish to practice as a general counselor.
