We are pleased to recruit for our APA-Accredited Postdoctoral Residency in Clinical Psychology in the Special Emphasis Area of Geriatric Psychology.

Our residency follows a Practitioner-Scholar model with over 50 years dedicated to psychology training in the culturally rich metropolis of Cleveland, Ohio. The LSCDVAMC is one of the largest VA Medical Centers in the country and the Geropsychology Fellowship is our longest- standing psychology postdoctoral position (1993). The Geropsychology Fellow will function as a full member of both inpatient and outpatient geriatric interdisciplinary teams. There is opportunity for a multitude of training experiences with the core of the program consisting of the following rotations:

(1). Geriatric Evaluation and Management Unit: An inpatient geriatric rehabilitation unit which has received a Program of Excellence Award for the high quality of care dedicated to the geriatric veterans.

(2). Geriatric Outpatient Primary Care Clinic: An outpatient clinic that provides interdisciplinary care for ethnically diverse geriatric population.

(3). One 12-month or two 6-month rotations including options from the Community Living Center, Neuropsychological Evaluation, Hospice Palliative Care Team.

(4). 20% of weekly time dedicated to scholarly research/program development.

The Geropsychology Fellow will develop advanced functional competencies in geropsychology guided by contemporary research and consistent with the APA 2013 Guidelines for Psychological Practice with Older Adults. The focus of training will be to develop advanced diagnostic, assessment, and treatment planning skills for the older adult and their family members from a biopsychosocial perspective. Consultation skills specific to the geriatric population will be gained and the Geropsychology Fellow will have ample opportunity to collaborate with an interdisciplinary team members and a variety of services in the hospital (e.g. Dementia Care Coordination, Caregiver Support Program) and community organizations (i.e. Adult Protective Services, Local Area on Aging, Alzheimer’s Association). Our geriatric team is also actively collaborating with the Benjamin Rose Institution, a national leader pursuing innovations in practice and policy to address the issues of aging. There will be opportunity for individual, couples, family, and interdisciplinary team interventions, many patients with a complexity of psychiatric and medical comorbidities. An emphasis is placed on evidence based interventions, including STAR-VA (An interdisciplinary, non-pharmacological approach to the management of dementia related behaviors in the Community Living Center). Montessori based interventions are also utilized. Exceptional opportunities for geriatric assessments will be offered including decision making capacity evaluations, driving evaluation, cognitive, and psychiatric evaluations.

We offer a variety of didactic seminars, including weekly geriatric seminar, weekly Topics in Geriatric Medicine, and Psychiatry Grand Rounds. Residents also gain experience in supervising interns.

The stipend is $43,912 for the 2014-2015 training year.

Applicants must be U.S. citizens, and must have graduated from an APA-accredited clinical or counseling psychology graduate program and an APA-accredited internship in sufficient time to be appointed prior to the start date of mid-September 2014.
