Introducing San Francisco Commencement Speaker Dr. Carl Mack
San Francisco - Monday, May 7, 2007 -- Dr. Carl Mack, California School of Professional Psychology and Marshall Goldsmith School of Management Professor, will address graduating students at Spring Commencement. Dr. Mack began his career working with teen groups in the area of recreational leadership. During this time, he developed and implemented an extensive tutorial network that matched the skills of university students with the needs of elementary students. He later moved to the corporate sector, serving as the corporate manager for an organization development and consulting firm. For the past 35 years, he has worked at all levels of education as a teacher, academic chair, superintendent, lecturer and professor. Since 1996, he has served on the faculty of the California School of Professional Psychology and in 2004, he joined the faculty of the Marshall Goldsmith School of Management, teaching at both its Fresno and Sacramento campuses. From 1973 to 197, Dr. Mack was a core faculty member at CSPP’s Field Placement Series and Community Series in Alameda. Dr. Mack is a three-time graduate of the University of California at Berkeley, having received his BA, MA and PhD (all in sociology) from the University. Following the reception of his doctorate, Dr. Mack became the Director of African-American studies at the University of California, Davis where he also taught. Then, in 1980, he took the position of superintendent for Del Paso High School District in Sacramento, California, which he maintained until 2002. Drawing on his experiences in education, Dr. Mack has written and published several articles on matters of child development, families, culture and diversity, and authority and leadership. He is a member of the A. K. Rice Institute, American Sociological Association, Blacks for Effective Community Action, Small School Districts Association and the Association of California School Administrators. He has also conducted parenting workshops and institutes throughout the western region of the United States. Dr. Mack is a noted consultant in group and human relations in the tradition of the Tavistock Institute of Human Relations, London, England and A. K. Rice Institute, Rainer, WA. Under the auspices of the A. K. Rice Institute, he has worked on the staff of many group relations conferences in the United States. He has also served as the Director of conferences including Teachers College, Columbia, University and the annual conference sponsored by the California School of Professional Psychology, Alliant International University. He is also the Principal Consultant of Abuya Works, a consulting firm that focuses on organizational change and transformation. Throughout his life, Dr. Mack has been trained in meditation and various forms of martial arts, including Tai Chi Chuan, Ba Qua and Praying Mantis. He currently resides in Davis, California.
