Rockway Institute Awarded $50,000 grant for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender (LGBT) Scientific Accuracy in the Media Project

San Francisco, January 17, 2007  — The Gill Foundation has awarded a $50,000 grant to Alliant International University’s Rockway Institute in support of its Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender (LGBT) Scientific Accuracy in the Media Project.

For this project, the Rockway Institute is assembling a national cadre of 75-100 scientists studying LGBT issues with the goal of conveying the results of their research to broadcast and print media in the US and abroad.  The Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) based in New York and Los Angeles has agreed to help in this effort, providing mechanisms to convey the Rockway Institute's scientific content to the media in the form of press releases, press conferences, radio and television interviews, and press "tool kits" for reporters.

"Ultimately, the Rockway Institute is poised to serve as a legitimate social science counterpoint to extremist antigay groups that are spreading misinformation in the media about LGBT issues," commented Dr. Robert-Jay Green, executive director of the Rockway Institute.

Founded in February 2006, the Rockway Institute brings together social science, mental health, and medical expertise to counter antigay prejudice and inform public policies affecting lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgendered (LGBT) people. A primary goal is to convey accurate scientific and professional information about LGBT issues to the media, legislatures, and the courts. The Institute also conducts scientific research relevant to LGBT policy questions in the fields of family relations, education, healthcare, social services, and the workplace.

The Gill Foundation, based in Denver, Colorado, was formed to improve the quality of life for the LGBT community on a regional and national basis. It is the nation's largest private foundation working to secure equal opportunity for all people without regard to sexual orientation or gender expression.

"We are very grateful to the Gill Foundation for making a significant contribution toward the Institute's annual fundraising goals," said Dr. Green.
