Philippine Ambassador Alfonso T. Yuchengco Welcomed to Alliant Board of Trustees

 
 

San Francisco, February 23, 2007  — Alliant International University joyously welcomed Ambassador Alfonso T. Yuchengco, currently Presidential Advisor on Foreign Affairs and Chairman of the Yuchengco Group of Companies, Republic of the Philippines, to its Board of Trustees last week with two celebrations.

On Monday, February 5th, the Ambassador hosted Alliant International University President Geoffrey Cox, Dr. Cox's wife Dr. Stephanie Kalfayan, Vice Provost for Academic Affairs at Stanford University, and Alliant GSOE Professor Estela Matriano and Carole Caparros at the Bankers Club of the Bank of America in San Francisco.

The University reciprocated the honor when President Cox hosted a gala dinner at Patio Espaňol restaurant on February 7. Alliant guests included Dr. Karen Schuster Webb, Systemwide Dean of the Alliant Graduate School of Education; Estela Matriano, Professor of  Cross Cultural Studies; Carole Caparros, Instructional Project Coordinator, Terence Barber, Vice President for International Operations;  John DeMichele, Vice President for Development and Jennifer Wilson, Vice President for Administration and Legal Counsel. Selected guests from the San Francisco Filipino community included the Ambassador’s daughter, Mona Lisa Yuchengco and Philippine Consul General Rowena Mendoza Sanchez.

Ambassador Yuchengco came from the Philippines to attend his first Board of Trustees meeting on February 9, 2007 at the Alliant International University Board Room in San Francisco.

Alfonso T. Yuchengco has served as:

  • Presidential Adviser on Foreign Affairs with Cabinet Rank (January 30, 2004-present),
  • Philippine Permanent Representative to the United Nations with the rank of Ambassador (November 2001-December 2002),
  • Presidential Special Envoy to China, Japan and Korea (2001), 
  • Presidential Assistant on APEC Matters with Cabinet Rank (1998-2000),
  • Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of the Philippines to the People's Republic of China (PROC) (1986-1988), and
  • Chairman, Council of Private Sector Advisors to the Philippine Government on the Spratlys Issue (Marine and Archipelagic Development Policy Task Group (1995-1998).

In January 2004, Philippine President Arroyo appointed him as Presidential Advisor on Foreign Affairs with Cabinet rank. 
   
Ambassador Yuchengco is Chairman of the Pan Malayan Management and Investment Corporation (PMMIC), which is the holding company of the flagship institutions of the Yuchengco Group of Companies (YGC). There are 52 organizations/corporations in the YGC with interests in banking, insurance, construction, agriculture and education. 

The leading companies in the group are the Rizal Commercial Banking Corporation (RCBC), Malayan Insurance (MICO), Great Pacific Life Assurance (GPL), House of Investments (HI) and the Mapua Institute of Technology.

He is also a member of the Board of Trustees, New York Asia Society; Member of the International Advisory Board of the University of Alabama; Former Chairman of the Board of Directors of the International Insurance Society Inc.; Member of the International Board of Trustees of the McLaren School of Business at the University of San Francisco; Member of the Board of Overseers of the Columbia University Business School; a current member of the Pacific Forum; Former Chairman of the Asian Bankers Association and Former Chairman and Advisory Board member of the Confederation of Asia-Pacific Chambers of Commerce and Industries (CACCI).

Ambassador Yuchengco also served as the Chairman of the Board of Directors of Dole Philippines (subsidiary of Castle & Cooke, Inc.) Philippine Long Distance Telephone Company and Philippine Fuji Xerox Corporation.
