Goldsmith School Offers New Sustainable Business Concentration to MBA and MIBA students in San Diego

San Diego, February 13, 2007  — MBA and MIBA students at Alliant’s San Diego campus continue to stay ahead of the business curve with the new Sustainable Business Concentration. The sustainable business concentration is a continuation of the Marshall Goldsmith School of Management’s (MGSM) commitment to preparing students for today’s evolving business climate.

“In the Goldsmith School, we pride ourselves on preparing students to compete in

the global market. For our students to succeed, they have to be prepared to lead a rapid transition from the old way of doing business to businesses can remain profitable today – without limiting the options or the quality of life of our children and grandchildren,” said Associate Professor David A. Bainbridge, MGSM-San Diego.

Noting an Arthur D. Little survey of 481 companies in which 95% of responding executives counted sustainable development as important to their business future, Bainbridge says that the field of business and management is changing, with the focus shifting from short-term financial gains to long-term appreciation of economic, social and natural capital. This emphasis has led to what is often called the "triple bottom line" (profit, people and the planet). The sustainable management concentration at MGSM has been developed especially to prepare business practitioners to understand and manage for this triple bottom line - and to take advantages of the opportunities this time of change provides.

The concentration includes three new courses: sustainable management, sustainable marketing, and environmental management reporting. These courses reflect the professional practice model that the Marshall Goldsmith School emphasizes. Classes involve extensive research, discussion, case studies and problems from around the world.

Alliant has gathered an impressive group of professors to head up the program. Leading the group is Associate Professor Dr. David Bainbridge, who brings more than 30 years of experience in sustainable management into the classroom, with experience working for a wide range of clients in China, Mexico, Belize, Portugal, Jordan and England. He is a past advisor for California Energy Commission, California Department of Transportation and National Affordable Housing Coalition.

“I am excited about the chance to bring my 30 years of experience in sustainable management into the classroom, preparing students for professional practice in a manner that is good for the bottom line, the community and the planet,” said Bainbridge. “The growing concern over global overheating, persistent pollutants and resource shortages is driving the change to greener business. Students need to be able to see the ecopreneurship opportunities and to fill the increasing number of jobs that demand sustainability skills sets.”
