June 2006 - Anonymous Donor Gives $50,000 to Establish Scholarship Honoring Dr. Jay Haley

San Diego – June 22, 2006 --  An anonymous donor has contributed $50,000 to establish a scholarship named for Dr. Jay Haley, leading founder of the field of family therapy, the “father” of strategic therapy, and faculty member in the Alliant’s Marital and Family Therapy (MFT) programs.

The Jay Haley scholarship will provide $10,000 dollars annually  for up to five years and will be awarded to a student enrolled in the California School of Professional Psychology (CSPP) on Alliant’s San Diego campus or attending the Irvine or Sacramento satellite locations. The award will based on financial need, and demonstrated contribution to society with a particular regard to underserved, minority populations.

“The donor’s concern for minority and underserved populations is appropriate given Dr. Haley’s pioneering work in training ethnic minority therapists, and his keen interest in working with underserved and  minority families,” said Dr. Scott Woolley, Systemwide Director of the Marital and Family Therapy programs.

Dr. Haley was the first editor of the first family therapy journal, and has written 20 books, numerous important articles, and has produced many training films  - some which feature CSPP students. Dr. Haley, along with Dr. Salvador Minuchin started training minority therapists over 30 years ago in order to better meet the needs of minority families.

To prepare students for careers as professional marriage and family therapists, working with individuals, couples and families, CSPP students develops skills in the mental health assessment, diagnosis and treatment of individuals and relationship systems. CSPP curriculum is designed to seamlessly integrate academics and field placement. Mentored both in the classroom and in their field placements, students receive the personal attention they need to excel and become professional members of their field even before graduation.

Alliant is the product of the 2001 merger of two highly innovative institutions: the California School of Professional Psychology, the first freestanding institution in the US dedicated to training clinical psychologists; and United States International University, which was a pioneer in multicultural and international education. Alliant has campuses in Fresno, Irvine, Los Angeles, Sacramento, San Diego, San Francisco and Mexico City.  Alliant has provided an educational home for many nontraditional students and others who have not been welcomed into other institutions.  The university enrolls close to 3,600 students in education, psychology, organizational studies and business programs.
