San Francisco – June 8, 2006 – Dr. Rodney L. Lowman has been named a Fellow in the Society of Clinical Psychology, Division 12 of the American Psychological Association (APA). He received official notification of his election in May, 2006. This distinction adds to previous honors: Dr. Lowman already holds fellowship status in two APA Divisions: 13 (Consulting) and 14 (Industrial-Organizational Psychology). Dr. Lowman’s career has emphasized the interface of clinical and consulting/I-O psychology. Through his scholarship, teaching, training, and service, he and has influenced all of these seemingly disparate areas and brought to the psychological field an understanding of the areas into which they overlap and can be integrated. Dr. Lowman (pictured at left) is a prolific writer who has authored and edited eight books; his works are used nationwide in training professionals. He has published more than 80 articles and chapters about clinical/mental-health and organizational issues. He was the founding editor of The Psychologist-Manager Journal and served on the editorial boards of journals such as Consulting Psychology Journal, Practice & Research and Professional Psychology: Theory and Practice. He has also made hundreds of presentations at professional conferences. Dr. Lowman’s first book-length publication, Pre-Employment Screening for Psychopathology: A Guide to Professional Practice critically explored the ways that psychological screening for psychopathology was inappropriately being used for such positions as nuclear power plant operators, police, and firefighter positions. (An earlier paper by Dr. Lowman won the "Best Paper" award for the Human Factors Division of the American Nuclear Society.) Another of Dr. Lowman’s books, The Clinical Practice of Career Assessment: Interests, Abilities & Personality, has become a classic in its area. Published in 1991 by the American Psychological Association, the book showed how clinical methods can used to help individuals make good career choices and re-directing themselves from bad ones. Among his other books are the seminal Counseling and Psychotherapy of Work Dysfunction, Handbook of Organizational and Consulting Psychology and the classic Psychology in Organizations, now in its second edition. Dr. Lowman has shown leadership in the area of professional ethics and has helped create a greater understanding of how the APA ethics code applies to I-O and clinical psychologists. Of Ethical Practice of Psychology in Organizations (2006, American Psychological Association; now in its 2nd Edition), a book edited by Dr. Lowman, one of the premiere experts in the field, Marvin Dunnette, of the University of Minnesota, wrote: “Lowman has done a superb job in this book of developing and discussing cases illustrative of a wide range of practices and behaviors that present challenges to professional judgment.” Dr. Lowman also served on the Ethics Committee of the American Psychological Association during a period of major transition in the expectations about psychologists’ ethical duties and responsibilities, especially concerning sexual relationships with clients. A revered teacher who has taught graduate, undergraduate and professional students in multiple settings, Dr. Lowman has taught courses in psychopathology, psychological assessment, and career and work dysfunctions assessment as well as more traditional I-O psychology areas. He has taught models of career assessment and counseling, work dysfunctions, and ethics to professional psychologists around the world. Dr. Lowman’s professional service includes serving as President of the Consulting Psychology Division of APA, as chair of APA’s Board of Professional Affairs, and as a member of its Committee on Professional Practice and Standards and the Committee on Psychological Tests and Assessments. He has also served as President of Psychologists in Management (SPIM). During his career, Dr. Lowman has served as Director of Child & Family Programs for the Houston Child Guidance Center, Director of Occupational Mental Health Programs for Duke University Medical Center, and services in academia from Assistant Research Scientist at the University of Michigan’s Institute for Social Research, Psychology Department Head, Program Director and Dean at Alliant. In addition to his election to fellowship within APA Division 12, Dr. Lowman was recently appointed Provost/Vice President of Academic Affairs at Alliant International University.
