Teaching & Learning Institute Awards 12 Research Grants that Promote Faculty/Student Collaboration

December 15, 2006 - San Diego, California – The Teaching and Learning Institute’s (TLI) second annual Funded Research Program has awarded stipends to 12 Alliant faculty/student research teams for investigation of worthy academic inquires.

Chosen faculty members were notified on November 20 after a panel of Alliant faculty and TLI staff reviewed proposals submitted on October 16, 2006. Faculty members received $1,500 and undergraduate and graduate student research assistants were also awarded a small stipend.

The stipends are funded by a Title V grant the University received from the US Department of Education and by the Office of the Provost/Vice President for Academic Affairs and the Center for Undergraduate Education (CUE).

Applicants had to provide a written description of their research interest, a short project proposal, and a statement about how they would use the stipend to complete their research project. Applicants also had to indicate an undergraduate and graduate student who would serve as a research assistant.

Participants will provide bi-monthly reports on projects ranging from Disability and language to Podcasting and Marriage and Family Therapy. On February 28, 2007, each faculty/student team will submit their first bi-monthly progress report to TLI.

Upon completion of the project, participants in the Funded Research Program are required to submit their findings to at least one scholarly journal and/or present at a conference. Timelines for completion of the projects vary.

TLI functions under the auspices of the Center for Undergraduate Education located on Alliant’s San Diego Campus.

TLI provides faculty with professional development by creating workshops based upon faculty wants and needs; developing systems for peer-to-peer feedback; and increasing faculty integration of learned skills into classroom settings, with a strong focus on technology infusion.  Through faculty development and support TLI is able to facilitate students’ academic success.

The Institute has also created a clearinghouse to promote faculty and student partnerships, increasing academic research interest on projects related to teaching and learning of Hispanic and other under-represented students, and disseminating research results internally and externally, all while emphasizing community and respect for individuality.
