Aug. 2006 - WCCI Conference in Manila Features Alliant GSOE's Dean Webb & Professor Matriano

 

 

 Manila – August 12, 2006 – The 12th conference of the World Council for Curriculum and Instruction (WCCI), held August 6-12 in Manila, the Philippines, has featured multiple presentations by members of the faculty and administration of Alliant International University.

The conference, entitled "Building A Culture of Peace for A Civil Society,” has included presentations from:

  • Dr. Karen Schuster- Webb, Dean of the Graduate School of Education (GSOE) at Alliant
  • Dr. Estela Matriano, GSOE Professor and Executive Director of WCCI
  • Dr. Rodney L. Lowman, Provost and Vice President of Academic Affairs

WCCI’s conference, which occurs every second year, took place in the historic Manila Hotel, headquarters for General Douglas MacArthur during World War II. Roughly 500 participants came to the conference from 25 countries.

The event generated front-page headlines in Manila, where the Manila Bulletin noted:

Department of Education officer-in-charge Undersecretary Dr. Fe Hidalgo will keynote the opening of the week-long international gathering of educators, which carry the theme "Building a culture of peace for a civil society."

Other guest speakers include former President Fidel V. Ramos, Ambassador Alfonso T. Yuchengco, and former WCCI president (1997-1999) Shigekasu Takemura of Japan.
Led by WCCI-Philippines president Dr. Carolina Danao and conference chairwoman Dr. Dalisay Brawner, the triennial conference is looking forward to bringing together local and foreign speakers from various education institutions around the world.

Six concurrent paper presentation sessions with supplementing workshops, covering topics on human rights, peace education, social justice, attitude development, ecological management, human development, global education, civil society, critical thinking, and multicultural education will be conducted by presentors from various countries.

Among the international experts who will deliver lectures are Takemura, Dr. Toh Swee Hin, and Dr. Dannielle Celemajer of Australia, Dr. Kama Oniah Kamaruzaman of Indonesia, Dr. Geoffrey Cox and Dr. Karen Schuster-Webb of the United States.
