San Diego, April 16, 2007  — The new film “Fighting Words” features the poetry of Center for Undergraduate Education (CUE) Professor Dr. Al Zolynas.

The film, which opened on April 6th at the Beverly Center in Los Angeles, California, features six of Zolynas’ poems, one which is set to music. Zolynas received a credit in the movie and the chance to contribute to a film that focuses on one of his greatest passions: poetry

“Fighting Words,” written and directed by E. Paul Edwards, features the works and/or performances of 18 southern California poets and follows the relationship between a publisher with HIV and a young poet who ultimately competes in the LA Poetron.

The film focuses on the world of Los Angeles slam poetry and features C. Thomas Howell, Jeff Stearns, Tara D'Agostino, Fred Williamson, Michael Parks, Edward Laurence Albert, Dominic Comperatore, Val Lauren, Jen Dede and Fred Willard.

One of Zolynas’ featured poems “Under Ideal Conditions” is also the name of a collection of poetry that garnered him the San Diego Book Awards prize for "Best Poetry" in 1994. In 2005, Zolynas’ “The Poetry of Men’s Lives: An International Poetry Anthology” was awarded the San Diego Book Award for best poetry anthology.

As a long-time Professor at CUE in San Diego, Zolynas has taught numerous literature and writing courses as well as poetry workshops. In May 2005 he was an invited presenter at the Sydney Writers’ Festival, where he read several of his own poems and was interviewed for The Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) Radio.
