Alliant Hosts Discussion Panel as Part of “Perspectives and Proposals on Migration” Conference

 
 

San Diego, April 3, 2007  — On March 6, the Division of International Studies of Marshall Goldsmith School of Management held a discussion panel in Green Hall on the Scripps Ranch Campus in San Diego as part of an international conference entitled “Perspectives and Proposals on Migration.”

The transatlantic dialog program and the Mexico City office of the Friedrich Naumann Foundation, which is based in Washington DC, invited to San Diego migration experts to take part in the conference from March 4 through 6, 2007. The meeting, which took place in co-operation with Atlas Economic Research Foundation and Alliant University, brought experts from Mexico, Central America, the USA and Europe for the first time.

Dr. David Felsen, Program Coordinator of the Goldsmith School of Management's Division of International Studies in San Diego participated in the conference. Other participants included California State Assembly member Lori Saldana, Alex Chafuen, President of the Atlas Foundation, Salvador Beltran of the Mexican Commission on Human Rights, Professor Francisco Alba of the Colegio de Mexico, Dr. Thomas Cieslik of the Friedrich Naumann Foundation, Dirk Hagen of the National Conference of State Legislatures, Brooke Menschel of the American Jewish Committee, Eneas Biglione of the Hispanic American Center for Economic Research, Steve Maviglio, Deputy Chief of Staff of the Office of the Speaker of the California Assembly, German Espinal, special assistant to the vice foreign minister of Honduras, Telmo Baltazar of the European Commission Delegation in Washington, DC.

Conference attendees included Dr. Fred Phillips, Associate Dean of MGSM, who offered a welcoming address, Dr. Bernardo Ferdman of MGSM, Dr. Louise Kelly of MGSM, Dr. Mohamad Yakan of International Studies, MGSM, as well as a number of other Alliant faculty members and students.

Conference presentations were made by Cristal Morehouse of the Bertelsmann Foundation of Germany, James Harrigan, professor at Saint Vincent College, Miguel Angel Jimenez, Mexican congressman representing the Nueva Allianza party, and Juan Jose Cabrera, former vice-minister in the Guatemalan foreign ministry.

The public panel discussion at the Alliant terminated the three-day-long conference.

The results of the conference will be present in the form of a position paper which will suggest political actions by the end of April.
