Locale & Amenities

San Diego is probably best known for its perpetual sunshine and temperate climate -- average temperature year-round is 74°F/23°C. Beaches, desert areas and high mountains are perfect for all kinds of outdoor recreation. San Diego is located approximately two hours from Los Angeles (by car), and only 20 minutes from Mexico.

San Diego has all the features of a big city -- including professional sports like Padres baseball and Chargers football -- and the charm of a small town. It's cosmopolitan: a crossroads for the cultural influences of both Latin American and the Pacific Rim. But it's also laid-back. A richly diverse collection of both urban and rural neighborhoods, San Diego caters both to those who seek cafes, concerts, and couture and to those whose taste runs to beaches, boarding, and flip-flops.

Feel like taking in the sights? We'd suggest Balboa Park, Sea World, the famous San Diego Zoo, the beaches, and the color and music of Old Town, which is like a piece old Mexico transplanted north of the border. But there are hundreds more things to see and do here!

The major industries that have been attracted to San Diego include biotechnology research and development, communications, electronics research and development, tourism, aerospace development, agriculture, post-secondary education, and the military services.

Around San Diego

The San Diego campus is part of the Southern California and Northern Baja, Mexico, trans-border community. This area encompasses several beach towns, inland suburban settlements, the San Diego/Tijuana metropolis and a dozen smaller cities. Vast expanses of beach, desert and mountain straddle the international border. The varied geography, the mix of urban and rural living and the rich diversity of religions, cultures, and politics create a fascinating environment in which to live, learn, work, and play.
