California School of Professional Psychology (CSPP) Alliant International University, San Francisco Campus

About the People of CSPP | CSPP Administration | CSPP Faculty | Meet Professor Ellin Bloch | Alumni of CSPP | Student Achievements | Education in LGBT Psychology at SF Campus |

The Clinical Psychology PhD and PsyD programs at CSPP in San Francisco offer extensive training in lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) psychology. The 5-year PhD program emphasizes clinical practice and research training equally whereas the PsyD (Doctor of Psychology) program primarily emphasizes clinical practice. These programs are fully accredited by the American Psychological Association (APA).

The doctoral programs have several core and adjunct faculty members whose primary area of scholarship and clinical work is LGBT clinical psychology. In addition, doctoral students have the possibility of doing one of their year-long clinical practica (field placements) at a LGBT mental health agency (either New Leaf Counseling Services in San Francisco, or the Pacific Center in Berkeley) and completing their year-long psychology internship at a LGBT mental health agency approved by the California Psychology Internship Council (CAPIC). A LGBT graduate student association (Alliant Queer Alliance) provides support and welcomes new students.

The university also is the home of the Rockway Institute, a national center LGBT research and public policy, which is headquartered on the San Francisco Campus and encompasses faculty members and students from all of Alliant’s academic programs and campuses. To our knowledge, this is the only LGBT social science/mental health “think tank” of its kind in the world and provides possibilities for students to do research under the supervision of highly qualified scholars at the institute. The Institute’s website address is http://rockway.alliant.edu

The Rockway Institute: A National Center for LGBT Research & Public Policy
Founded in 2006, The Rockway Institute brings together scientific research and professional expertise to counter antigay prejudice and inform public policies affecting lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) people.  The Institute's view is that public opinion, policies, and programs should be shaped by the facts about LGBT lives, not by political ideology. A primary goal is to organize the most knowledgeable social scientists, mental health professionals, and physicians in the United States to provide accurate information about LGBT issues to the media, legislatures, and courts. The Institute also conducts targeted research projects to address the nation's most pressing LGBT public policy questions.

The Rockway Institute administers the Connell Persico Scholarship Fund and offers paid research assistantships to selected doctoral students involved in LGBT work. On the San Francisco campus, the institute offers a distinguished lecturer series on LGBT issues for current students, alumni, and members of the professional community.  For further information, please visit the website at http://rockway.alliant.edu

LGBT Training in the Context of an Accredited Clinical Psychology Doctoral Program

The university resources described above—combined with the tremendous LGBT clinical, training and research opportunities in the San Francisco Bay Area—enable our students to obtain significantly more mentoring in LGBT psychology than students can receive in most other U.S. psychology departments. However, applicants should keep in mind that this training occurs in the context of a generalist clinical psychology doctoral program, as is required for accreditation by the American Psychological Association. The major focus of one's studies is in the general field of Clinical Psychology, with opportunities to specialize in LGBT work through self-selected field placements, research projects, and some courses.
