TESOL Master's Program: Irvine, Fresno & San Diego

Follow this link for information on the Doctoral TESOL program

The master's degree program in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) offers a balance between theory and practice through a combination of TESOL methodology, linguistics, and education courses.

The program features a curriculum relevant to the needs of TESOL practitioners, a highly qualified, experienced faculty, small classes and collaboration with our on-site Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages program. Students gain firsthand experience in classrooms through the Graduate School of Education's Partners for Success program by collaborating with local schools and community college districts.

The program is designed for both prospective and experienced English as a Second Language (ESL) and English as a Foreign Language (EFL) educators. The master's program meets the coursework requirements for the California Cross-cultural Language and Academic Development (CLAD) Certificate and the TESOL Graduate Certificate.

The Adult Education Emphasis TESOL master's program is offered on Alliant International University's San Diego, Irvine and Fresno Campuses. We also offer an Online Summer Residency MA program in San Diego.

Students in the TESOL master's program develop competencies in:

  • Techniques of teaching listening, speaking, reading, and writing to English language learners in a variety of educational settings
  • Application of linguistics and second language acquisition theory to English teaching
  • Teaching English as a foreign language abroad
  • Using technology to create enriched language learning environments
  • Developing curricula designed to meet the needs of linguistically and culturally diverse students

Students in the TESOL master's program follow careers in teaching English language learners in elementary or secondary schools, adult education programs, college and university-based ESL programs, and English as a Foreign Language programs abroad. Master's graduates also hold positions as instructors in teacher training programs in the US and throughout the world.
