English Proficiency Test

Alliant English Language Requirements
English Proficiency Test
ESL Courses

The English Proficiency Test (EPT) is used to determine your level of English proficiency. The test takes approximately three hours to complete. There are currently four parts to the exam:

  1. Reading Comprehension (50 minutes)
  2. Listening and Speaking (15 minutes)
  3. Grammar (45 minutes)
  4. Writing (45 minutes)

Students are assessed on each section of the test independently. This means that test results may show that a student needs additional instruction in writing and grammar, for example, but not in reading or listening/speaking.  In this example, the student only needs to take ESL instruction in writing and grammar.

The EPT has been shown over a number of years to be valid and reliable as an accurate assessment of a student’s English language ability. If test results indicate that ESL courses are necessary to prepare a student for academic work at Alliant, then that student will be required to take those courses regardless of his or her own beliefs about whether ESL courses are necessary. We realize that students have concerns about the additional money and time that are required to take ESL courses. Unfortunately, decisions about ESL courses are made based on a student’s ability in English, and not on his or her personal situation.

If you wish to prepare for the EPT, you can use a TOEFL textbook or TOEFL practice tests, since the EPT is similar in style to the TOEFL and TWE exams.
