ESL Course Completion Policy
All ESL courses must be completed in the first year of study at Alliant. ESL courses are three non-credit units. ESL courses do not apply toward completion of your academic degree, but are considered when calculating your course load. A full-time ESL course load is three classes per semester. Students who take less than a full ESL course load may take a combination of ESL and academic classes, in consultation with the student’s academic advisor, as follows:
| Total number of ESL courses required (per semester) |
Course Distribution |
| 3 courses |
3 ESL – 0 academic |
| 2 courses |
2 ESL – 2 academic |
| 1 course |
1 ESL – 3 academic | Students who do not register for the required ESL courses will have a hold placed on their ability to register for academic courses. Completion of required ESL courses is a university policy, and failure to complete ESL requirements may prevent a student from graduating from the University.
| The English as a Second Language (ESL) program offers a sequence of English courses at the intermediate and advanced levels. The courses provide academic English instruction in the skill areas of:
- Listening and Speaking,
- Writing and Grammar, and
- Reading and Vocabulary.
Based on the English Proficiency Test score, a student will either be exempt from ESL courses or placed in one or more ESL courses.
Course offerings are as follows:
- Listening/Speaking Writing/Grammar Reading/
Vocabulary
- Intermediate ESL LS4 ESL WG4 ESL RV4
- Advanced ESL LS5 ESL WG5 ESL RV5
A student who is placed in a Level 4 course is required to take the corresponding Level 5 course the following semester. If a student successfully completes (receives Credit) a Level 5 course, then no further courses in that skill area are required.
ESL courses are non-credit. Students receive a grade of Credit or No Credit based on their performance in the course. A student who receives a grade of No Credit will be required to retake the same course in the following semester.
