CTEL CLAD Certificate Program Frequently Asked Questions

1. Who can apply / qualify for the program?

Applicants must:

• Possess a valid California teaching credential.
• Hold a bachelor’s degree or higher from a regionally accredited institution of higher learning. Please submit an official copy of the transcript to the Admissions Office. (Unofficial copies may be accepted for conditional admissions while waiting for the official transcripts.
• Have a GPA of 2.5 or higher in the bachelor’s degree work or evidence of professional and/or academic growth subsequent to the bachelor’s degree.
• Provide two written confidential recommendations from those who can attest to the applicant’s abilities, interests and accomplishments in education.
• Submit official transcripts of the B.A. degree from all accredited institutions of higher education attended by the candidate.



2. What happens after the application?
   Upon receipt of the application, applicants will be sent an “Intent to Register” form with classes listed. When this form is returned to Admissions, you will be enrolled in the first two courses.



3. Is the program online or on campus?
   The courses are online with on-campus meetings at the beginning, midpoint, and end of the two terms. All of the meetings are held on Saturdays after 10:00 a.m. to allow those in distant areas time for travel. (School district cohorts may have afternoon sessions onsite.)



4. How long does the program take and when is the deadline for the next start time?
   The program consists of two 10 week sessions. The first session of the 08-09 academic year starts on February 7, 2009. Important Deadlines to remember for Spring 2009:

   February 2, 2009 Deadline to be registered

5. Are the on-ground sessions held at the School Districts?
   Cohorts of 20 students or more may request on-site meetings in their districts.



6. How much does the program cost?
   Each course costs $525 for a total of $2,100 for the four courses combined. You only pay for the courses for which you are registered (2 each session). Books can be purchased online for approximately $175.



7. Do you accept transfer credit from previous CLAD programs?
   No. The CTEL program is an integrated program specifically designed to address the new CCTC CTEL requirements.



8. Do we have to take the CTEL test?
   No. Students that successfully complete the Alliant CTEL program do not take the CTEL exam. Upon program completion, the University recommends to the CCTC students for the CTEL authorization.



9. If I come from out of the state of California, can I apply for the CTEL program?
   Certified out of state credentialed teachers who have started the application process with CCTC are eligible; however, all students still need to be able to attend the designated on-campus meetings.



10. How do I order books?
    All books should be ordered by students no later than 2 weeks prior to the start of class. Books can be purchased online for approximately $175. the book list is provided online on the Alliant CTEL webpage.

11. How do I apply?

12. How and when do I pay for the courses?
    After students are admitted and have returned their “Intent to Register” form top Admissions, they will be registered for their first two courses and should contact Student Accounts (858) 635-4517 to arrange for payment. Students are only charged for the courses in which they are currently enrolled.

14. What are the courses and course descriptions?
    
    Courses in the CTEL Certificate Program are:
    
    TES 7040 Culture and Development of Cross-Cultural Competencies (3 units)
    Exploration of the influence of culture and society on educational systems and communities. Focus on culture and cultural diversity and their relationship to the academic achievement of linguistically and culturally diverse students. Examination of the nature and manifestation of culture, cultural contact and cultural diversity in California, the U.S. and other global settings. Emphasis on knowledge and skills to develop culturally inclusive instruction and ability to utilize cross-cultural communication skills.
    
    TES 7410 Theory and Method of Second Language Teaching (3 units)
    Examination of theories of first and second language acquisition. Explores various factors affecting language development including cognitive, linguistic, physical, socio-cultural, and political. Introduces methods, approaches, and techniques for teaching English Language Development , Content ELD, and Specially Designed Academic Instruction Delivered in English.
    
    TES 7415 Assessment and Instruction of English Learners (3units)
    Examination of the role, purposes, and types of assessments, language and content-area assessment, and principles of standards-based assessment and instruction. Studies the foundations of English language/literacy development and content instruction. Emphasis on application of knowledge and strategies for teaching English language development, Content ELD, and Specially Designed Academic Instruction Delivered in English (SDAIE).
    
    TES 7420 Principles of Linguistics (3 units)
    Investigation of the nature, organization and function of human language. Focuses on the different components of language structure and use: phonology, morphology, syntax and semantics, language functions and variations, discourse, and pragmatics.



15. Can these courses apply toward a Master’s degree at Alliant?
    Courses may be applied toward the Alliant TESOL MA program. However, students must apply and be accepted into the master’s program and additional tuition fees and articulation requirements will be required.
