Students Working as a Team Provides Real-World Consulting Experience

Students from SWAT Consulting

The idea of Students Working as a Team (SWAT) Consulting germinated in the spring of 2005 as five energetic and very motivated students (who are pictured above) worked together on a major project for a class in Cultural Systems in Organizational Culture taught by Dr. Wendy Chung.

With Dr. Chung's guidance, the students generated a team mission, created a biography, conceptualized a team name and took on their first consulting client: Alliant’s Student Activities Division.

Today, SWAT has an office in the Center for Undergraduate Education (CUE) on the Scripps Ranch campus, and a full portfolio of clients, including:

  • The Students’ Activities Division at Alliant,
  • The Dana Danes Hairstylists,
  • American-made Car Club, and
  • The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.

Having successfully served these clients, providing marketing and public relations services, SWAT continues to broaden its network of real-world clients. As they learn more, they are also applying what they have learned from their courses in Marketing Public Relations.

Because of this consulting experience, these students have already penetrated the job market. They will graduate with resumes that reflect hands-on experience in conceptualizing, designing and implementing marketing public relations campaigns.

The founding members of the SWAT consulting team, some of whom recently graduated, are DeLauren Scott, Leilani Auhoon, Melissa Collins, Heidi Gebhardt, and Lindsay Beckham.

SWAT is open to Alliant students with an interest in communication, marketing and public relations.
