Clinical PsyD Program Fresno/Sacramento

The goal of the Clinical PsyD Program is to prepare students to become effective practitioners and scholars. These are the competencies for the Clinical PsyD program and the online option.

Effective Practitioners

Effective practitioners are defined by their ability to:

  1. Develop and maintain constructive relationships.
  2. Perform comprehensive psychological assessments that are geared towards answering specific referral questions and suited to the developmental, clinical and diversity needs of their clients.
  3. Perform a broad array of targeted psychological interventions suited to the developmental, clinical and diversity needs of their clients.
  4. Conduct research including appropriate research design, test construction, data analysis, program evaluation and scientific reporting.
  5. Perform both consultation and/or education with a variety of potential client and professional populations in a variety of settings.
  6. Engage in both management and supervision.
  7. Have the awareness, skills and knowledge necessary to perform all of the above effectively and appropriately with diverse populations.

Effective Scholars

Effective scholars are defined by their ability to:

  1. Develop new an understanding of human complexity (Learning how to learn).
  2. Synthesize existing knowledge; evaluate its strengths and weaknesses and experiment to test their hypotheses.
  3. Have a clear understanding of what is already known about people in their complexity through coursework in such areas as:

    a. History and Systems
    b. Biological Foundations
    c. Basic Foundations of Clinical Practice
    d. Social and Cultural Basis of Behavior

 All of the above are assessed using the following methods:

  1. Professors and reviewers judging discussions, papers, and presentations
  2. Classroom exams
  3. Comprehensive Exams
  4. Reviews of clinical work by faculty and supervisors
  5. Dissertation reviews by faculty and peers
  6. Reviews of professional behavior by faculty, supervisors, staff and peers.
