Title: Public Safety Officer (Graveyard shift II)

Department: Public Safety

Reports To: Chief of Public Safety

Hours: Thursday-Monday – 1200am-8am

Summary:

The Public Safety Officer, under the general direction of the Chief of Public Safety provides a wide range of services to the University community including crime prevention, crime control, parking control and furnishing aid and information to the campus community and visitors. Duties include responding to calls for service, investigating alarms, responding to crimes in progress and scenes of past crimes or incidents and building security. Performs duties in cooperation with the San Diego Police Department and local fire and medical services to minimize harm to victims, witnesses to crimes, and those responding or involved in emergency situations. Additionally, routine duties include responding to non-emergency call for service, providing information, collaborating with student organizations, staff, faculty and students residing in campus housing to reduce crime and fear, as well as, investigating and preparing written reports on crime, accidents, and injuries.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

1.           Patrol university property in a marked university public safety vehicle.   

 

2.           Patrol university property buildings and residential areas on foot.   

 

3.           Observe and report suspicious activity to local law enforcement agencies. 

 

4.           Enforce local laws and university rules and regulations. 

             

5.           Educate, present, and inform the community of crime awareness programs, and build community relations in an effort to suppress crime including community policing programs.

 

6.           General building security of University buildings.

 

7.                Provide general law enforcement services to the university community.

 

8.                Write incident reports, complete daily activity logs, and maintain general administrative duties as assigned.



Requirements:

Education:

 

High School or equivalent GED, law-enforcement, security preferred experience for a minimum of 2 years. Valid and clean California driver's license, CPR and First Aid, California Guard Card registration issued by the State of California; P.O.S.T. or 832 certificate (preferred), OC/Pepper spray and Baton Licenses.

 

 

Experience:

 

Must have a minimum of 2 years working in the security or law-enforcement field, preferably in a higher education institution setting.

Management Skills:

 

Ability to assume responsibility, to think clearly, and use sound judgment. Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions; to communicate effectively on the telephone, in person, and in writing. Strong interpersonal skills, including tact, diplomacy, and flexibility. Ability to work with diverse personalities and groups. Ability to establish and maintain cooperative and effective relationships with University personnel, students, vendors, visitors and various agencies. Skills to organize and prioritize work, as well as, manage time effectively with the flexibility to adapt to changing conditions.

 

Supervises:

Up to 2 contract security officers

Technical Skills:

Must have some knowledge of Penal Codes and Vehicle Codes, and law enforcement operational skills.

Technology Skills:

 

MS Operating systems, word, excel, PowerPoint, outlook and radio communications use.

Other Requirements:

 

Must be able to sit or stand for long periods of time and have no physical restrictions and be able to lift up to 50 lbs.
