Title: Coordinator of International Student Services

Department: Office of the Dean of Students

Reports To: Dean of Students

Hours: 9:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.

Summary:

The Coordinator of International Student Services, under the direction of the Dean of Students, develops programs and policies to support international students.  The coordinator ensures that the university is in compliance with the Department of Homeland Security, Department of State, Department of Labor, foreign embassies and banking institutions.  S/he also acts as a liaison with U.S. and foreign governmental agencies, and provides a central contact for international students, scholars, and community members. S/he is the primary contact for the university in regard to international students and scholars’ visa regulations, international employment and taxation regulations. The Coordinator of International Student Services serves as the Primary Designated School Official (PDSO) with full responsibility for F-1 student visa program and as Responsible Officer (RO) for J-1 Exchange Visitor program with government authority for all actions and compliance with SEVIS.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

      Regular Duties:

 

1.      Comply with regulations pertaining to international students and scholars.

2.      Interpret and apply immigration rules and regulations.

3.      Provide documentation and regular reporting on international students and scholars status to Department of Homeland Security and Department of State.

4.      Process and report practical training, change of status, reinstatement, extension of stay, change of address and out of status cases to appropriate governmental agencies.

5.      Maintain updated data and files on all transactions made on F-1 and J-1 students’ cases from time of pre-arrival to five years after departure.

6.      Remain current with world conditions, regulations of INS, SEVIS, Department of State, IRS, NAFSA, IIE, and other organizations in regard to international students and scholars.

7.      Monitor SEVIS process, procedures, reports and queries to be submitted to SEVIS, INS and Department of State.

8.      Provide support and assistance to international students for personal, financial, academic and institutional issues.

9.      Interface and coordinate with other campus units in matters related to international students’ admission, retention, I-20 issuance.

10.   Provide advice related to academic, admission eligibility, transcript evaluation, curriculum, programs and university policy and procedures pertaining to international students and scholars.

11.   Advise international students and scholars on immigration regulations, visa issuance, visa status, and other matters affecting their stay in the United States.

 

Periodic Duties:

 

1.      Work with other relevant AIU departments to coordinate data collection and transfer of international students and scholars.

2.      Organizing cultural events on campus.

3.      Develop Int’l cultural awareness programs for Alliant students, staff and faculty.

4.      Organize, write and update student handbooks, procedures manuals, and forms.

 



Requirements:

Education:

 

Bachelors in a relevant field is preferred

Experience:

 

Two years of related experience required, working with all aspects of F-1, J-1, H-1B, and TN visas, and at least two years experience in a university’s international office, immigration law firm, or other setting where foreign nationals are recruited.

 

Management Skills:

 

Must be a collaborative leader to work effectively with academic and student service unit of Alliant.

 

Technical Skills:

Ability to read, understand and implement regulatory changes as they relate to immigration matters; ability to learn and use large databases, including fsaAtlas, CARS, and SEVIS.  Must have effective interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills as well as an appreciation of diversity issues, cultural differences and students with varying level of English proficiency.
