Title: Chief of Public Safety

Department: Public Safety

Reports To: Director of Facilities

Hours: 9:00am-5:00pm

Summary:

The Chief of Public Safety, under the general direction of the Director of Facilities, is responsible for directing, supervising, training, disciplining and providing a leadership role to the public safety department and to preserve and maintain a crime free environment for students, faculty, staff, and guests. The Chief of Public Safety is a uniformed university employee who will perform law enforcement services to the Alliant International University community and to its surrounding areas. Additionally, the Chief will create a University-wide safety culture through safety training, risk assessments, and behavior modification programs and manages system wide emergency preparedness programs and will provide system wide support.

 

The successful candidate will be dedicated to providing high quality service to all constituencies of Alliant University. S/he will exhibit the highest professional standards and ethical principles and will be committed to the tenets of Alliant University’s Mission and Vision.

 

 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

1.     Prevention crime on campus.

2.     Enforce university rules and regulations.

  1. Provide general building security.
  2. Assist local law enforcement agencies in enforcing laws.
  3. Building community relations.
  4. Direct, supervise, train, and discipline public safety officers.
  5. Monitor, compile, and maintain annual crime statistics, in accordance with Jeanne Clery Act.
  6. University Safety Committee- maintains, chairs, and ensures the effectiveness and broad representation of the committee; provides regulations and technical consultation regarding health and safety issues to faculty, staff, and students.
  7. Develops programs to ensure the University’s compliance with federal, state, and local safety-related regulations, in addition to other environmental health, safety, and loss prevention standards and guidelines.
  8. Conducts claims investigations and evaluates risk management claims information to identify significant hazards and loss trends; identifies and recommends preventive measures and corrective actions.
  9. Performs regular physical inspections of University grounds, buildings, equipment, and operations; identifies hazards and incidents of regulatory non-compliance, and recommends corrective measures.
  10. Provides ongoing safety and loss prevention training to various University departments to reduce the frequency and severity of accidental losses.
  11. Other duties as assigned.


Requirements:

Education:

 

BA/BS Criminal Justice or equivalent with 5 years minimum work experience.

Professional Designation:

 

Experience:

 

5 years supervisor experience; 5-7 years basic law enforcement experience.

Management Skills:

 

 

Supervises:

Public Safety Officers (5), Contract Security Guards (3), Student, Employees (2).

 

Technical Skills:

General knowledge of penal codes and local laws.  Ability to effectively work with local law enforcement agencies.  Ability to make decisions based on personal or general experience when dealing with the general public.  Strong communication skills, both verbal and written. Self-motivated and needing little supervision.

 

Technology Skills:

 

Windows based systems, Microsoft Office, CARS.

·         OC/Pepper Spray Permit

·         CPR/First Aid License

·         California Drivers License

·         Must be willing to travel to other Alliant locations
