Center for Innovation in Behavioral Health
A New Home for a Storied Tradition
in Psychology

Carl Rogers, Viktor Frankel, Abraham Maslow, and Jay Haley were some of the most important figures in psychology in the 20th century. Each of them held faculty appointments at Alliant’s San Diego. We are building a future on the shoulders of giants.

The California School of Professional Psychology (CSPP) has been educating clinical psychologists for nearly 40 years. It was the first and remains one of the largest schools devoted to training clinicians—professionals who are dedicated to helping people solve personal and social problems in all walks of life. Students select concentrations in health psychology, substance abuse, child and family therapy, forensics or organizational psychology. All of CSPP’s programs integrate research, theory and practice, with students learning in real practice settings as well as in classrooms. As a result students provide thousands of hours of counseling and care, mostly to needy Californians, and they serve a crucial role in support of overburdened health care and social service agencies.

CSPP’s new Dean, Dr. Morgan Sammons, has been literally on the front lines of providing mental health services in the most demanding settings imaginable. As Director of Clinical Support for the US Navy Bureau of Medicine and Surgery, Captain Sammons recently served a tour of duty in Fallujah, Iraq. He is one of the world’s leading experts in Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and in the emerging field of psychopharmacology. Dr. Sammons brings a unique perspective on the role of psychological services as key elements in a healthy society. His commitment to service, as exemplified by his career in the military, is unparalleled.

The Center for Innovation in Behavioral Health has been a dream for nearly a decade. A grant from the US Government funded preliminary plans for a state-of-the-art center combining teaching, clinical care and research facilities. The next step in the process—the completion of architectural drawings—awaits further support. The Center will be a resource not only for the next generation of leaders in psychology, but also for the many people in the community served by CSPP's clinical programs.
