California Teaching Credential for International Teachers
Alliant International University uniquely offers a California Teaching Credential program geared towards both educators at school sites internationally and in California. The program is an ideal fit for US citizens teaching abroad, California teaching candidates who wish to enrich their California teaching credential with international field experience, and international teachers who wish to expand their skill sets and/or prepare for a possible teaching career within California.
The program results in a K-12 Preliminary Single or Multiple Subject Teaching Credential recommendation to the California Commission
on Teacher Credential (CCTC) and is designed upon the CCTC's framework and standards. Preliminary teaching credentials must be elevated to a California Clear Teaching Credential
within five years.
FORMAT AND PACING
Our 28-unit program effectively integrates pedagogy and theory with applied, practical experiences. The program can generally be completed within two semesters to two years, depending upon the student’s course load and progress. All courses are taught in English.
Our program includes:
- Online coursework covering topics such as curriculum and instruction, diverse learning environments, multiculturalism, teaching English language learners and technology
- A 45-hour mentored practicum experience within one semester at the student’s current international teaching site (or partner school site) or a California K-12 school site
- An 18-week student teaching experience that combines nine weeks at the international student's home school site or, for the California resident, at an international partner school site, plus a nine-week student teaching residency at a California school site during a fall, spring or summer term. California student teaching residencies for the international candidate are based in the San Francisco Bay Area.
Both field experiences are overseen by a Master Teacher and an Alliant-trained mentor
guided by and grounded in the CCTC's standards for teacher performance. Students also participate in real-time seminars via video conferencing on eight evenings during
each of their fall and spring semesters, plus two Saturday workshops per semester.
ADD ON A MASTER’S IN TEACHING
Teaching credential students have the option to add on a master’s in Teaching by completing just three additional online courses. Read more about our M.A.E. in Teaching for International Educators.
