Event Description

Two years in a row, California Office of Statewide Health Planning (OSHPD) issued grants to Alliant International University to conduct Latino Healthcare Career Expo (2012) and Latino Healthcare Career Expo II, High School Edition (2013), a community outreach project that help expose Latino middle and high school students to future career options in healthcare field. This is part of the statewide effort to enhance the healthcare workforce.

Latino Healthcare Career Expo II, High School Edition, is an OSHPD grant funded project. The dates are Friday, October 11, 2013 and Tuesday, October 22, 2013. Approximately 100 middle school and high students and their family members will be invited to attend the event. The target population is Latino middle to high school students and their parents. The objective is to share educational requirements and career options in both healthcare and mental healthcare.

Day 1: Story Telling

Bilingual students/graduates of different educational levels will be in several breakout rooms to tell their personal stories on how their families support their education, what they have to overcome, and their career aspirations in healthcare, and ways to pay for their education. The format of story-telling is to be culturally sensitive and age appropriate.

Catered dinner and childcare will be provided. Location: Rancho Minerva Middle School

Day 2: Visual Display of Healthcare Career Pathway

Students of different educational levels from Day 1 will be paired with healthcare providers, from the lowest education level to the highest, by physical health and mental health. Middle and high school students and their parents are to go through the pathway, interact with the presenters, to get more information on how the education and career options match together.

Catered dinner and childcare will be provided. Location: Vista High School
