Alumni and Friends Newsletter | Summer 2015
Dear CSPP Alumni and Friends,
Summer is here, which means graduation season is upon us! Below we will highlight
our 2015 Commencement Speakers, invite our alumni living in the greater Los Angeles
and SF Bay Area for special events June 5 and June 8, respectively, congratulate our
alumni presenters and award recipients at CPA and SIOP and share lots of handy alumni
links, including to our CSPP Alumni LinkedIn groups.
There have been some inspiring and unusual commencement speeches this year across the United States. One of my personal favorites was Jon Bon Jovi performing a new song for Rutgers' grads at the end of his address.
Here at CSPP/Alliant, we have four California Commencement ceremonies, and we are proud to say that this year, CSPP alumni are giving the Commencement Address in three of the four California ceremonies:
Today in Fresno, Dr. Thomas Shaffer (CSPP-Fresno '78) will address our graduates. Dr. Shaffer has taught at CSPP and served as a Clinical Supervisor at the W. Gary Cannon Psychological Services Center since the early 1980s. Among a long list of notable accomplishments, he has been involved in national and international research focused on the Rorschach Inkblot method. In addition to numerous publications in professional journals, he is the author of An Ego Functions Model for the Organization of Psychological Test Data, an integrative approach to writing psychological test reports.
Tomorrow, Dr. Paloma Pavel (CSPP-SF '91) will be addressing our San Francisco and Sacramento campus graduates. Dr. Pavel is the President of the Earth House Center and co-Founder of the Breakthrough Communities project. She also served as the Director of Strategic Communications for the Sustainable Metropolitan Communities Initiative at the Ford Foundation. She is a frequent keynote presenter nationally and internationally on the theory of living systems and urban sustainability, and editor of Breakthough Communities: Sustainability and Justice in the Next American Metropolis.
And next weekend in Los Angeles, Dr. Rhonda Brinkley-Kennedy (CSPP-LA ' 92) will impart words of wisdom to our Los Angeles graduating class. Dr. Brinkley-Kennedy is presently Interim Dean of the Hufstedler School of Education at Alliant International University and Founder of the South Central Training Consortium (SCTC), a non-profit which has provided clinical training and supervison for over 20 years to graduate psychology students, who provide mental health services to non-profit agencies and their clients residing in underserved communities in South Los Angeles.
At our San Diego/Irvine commencement last weekend, the Commencement address was presented by Maria de los Remedios Gomez Arnau, Consulate General of Mexico, San Diego.
Special Events in LA June 5 and SF June 8
Alumni living in the SF Bay Area are cordially invited to a special event bringing together alumni and current students who are working with Asian Pacific Islander clients and communities. The event is Monday, June 8 from 6-8pm at our San Francisco campus. Food will be provided. An RSVP is required in advance. To RSVP, or if you have questions, please email CSPPalumni@alliant.edu
Save the Dates for APA in August, AAMFT in September and SIOP next April
Save the dates for the APA Convention in Toronto August 6-9, 2015, the AAMFT Conference in Austin, TX Sept. 3-6, 2015 and the SIOP Conference in Anaheim April 14-16, 2016. The annual CSPP Alumni and Friends Reception at APA is slated for Friday August 7 at 6:00pm. We are planning on participating in the AAMFT Showcase, and we are also planning a Networking Mixer at SIOP in Anaheim next April (specific dates TBA).
