Alliant Director Honored with Chargers/NFL Hispanic Heritage Leadership Award
The San Diego Chargers have honored Alliant International University’s Dr. Guadalupe
Corona as the recipient of the 2012 Chargers/NFL Hispanic Heritage Leadership Award,
which recognizes the important contributions of Hispanic leaders in each National
Football League market.
Dr. Corona was honored during the September 23 San Diego Chargers–Atlanta Falcons
game. The entire National Football League is observing Hispanic Heritage Month. And the Chargers have a deep history of supporting Hispanic culture.
As a result of her selection, a $3,000 check donated by Bud Light will be presented
to the charity of Dr. Corona’s choice in her name.
“I’m donating the money to the Alliant International University’s Office of Latino Achievement Initiative,” Dr. Corona said. “I know the money will go a long way in helping a lot of Latinos
reach their educational dreams.”
The Latino Achievement Initiative promotes Alliant as a Hispanic-serving institution
that focuses on meeting the higher education needs of traditionally underserved Latino
populations. The Initiative also offers expertise about Latinos to all Alliant students,
faculty and staff.
Dr. Corona is a first-generation American of Mexican descent. Her mother is from Culiacan,
Sinaloa and her father from Autlán, Jalisco. Dr. Corona is the oldest of four children.
The first to go to college, Dr. Corona received a bachelor’s degree in Mexican-American
studies with a minor in women’s studies at San Diego State and received both her master’s
and doctorate in educational leadership from the University of San Diego.
