Addictions Institute Launch Kicked Off on ABC TV Show in San Francisco
San Francisco, CA: Dr. Stephanie Brown, a psychologist who is recognized nationwide for her expertise in addictions and who is the new Consulting Director of Alliant International University's Addictions Institute, appeared on ABC 7 TV in San Francisco on "Beyond the Headlines" on Sunday, December 30.
The half hour show provided a public airing of the expertise that will be available through the new Institute, which was launched in December, 2008.
The Addictions Research Institute will assist psychologists in understanding the treatment of additions and also serve the research needs of the Alliant's doctoral students, providing education, clinical training, and stipends and resources for their dissertations.
"This will fuel the necessary study of one of the most common, but least understood, problems psychologists encounter: addiction," said Consulting Director Dr. Stephanie Brown, who is also a CSPP alumna and Continuing Education Instructor at Alliant.
Dr. Brown will run the institute with Executive Director Dr. Steven Bucky, Director of Professional Training and long-time professor for the California School of Professional Psychology. They have a combined 60 years of experience in treating and studying addictions.
Dr. Brown is the director of her own Addictions Institute, an outpatient counseling and therapy program in Menlo Park, California. She was the founder and director of the Alcohol Clinic at Stanford University Medical Center.
Dr. Bucky, who recently completed his position as Interim Systemwide Dean for the California School of Professional Psychology, has served as the Director for the Naval Alcohol Rehabilitation Center's Evaluation and Analysis Department. He was Clinical Director for the Alcoholic and Drug Treatment Center at Mission Bay Hospital, and currently serves as the drug and alcohol consultant for the NFL's San Diego Chargers.
The Addictions Institute will be located in San Francisco and San Diego with a research branch in Mexico City. Thanks to a generous $100,000 donation from Alliant alumnus Jorge Larrea Espinosa, the institute now has initial funding and a partnership with Monte Fenix Foundation and Clinic in Mexico City, of which Dr. Larrea is chairman. Alliant will use a matching grant to bring the total initial funding to $200,000.
"The resources and strengths of Alliant and Monte Fenix complement each other very well," said Alliant President Dr. Geoffrey Cox. "Together we have a base of talent, experience and resources devoted to work in the addictions field that may be unmatched anywhere. The opportunities for impact in this critical area are unlimited."
